Raised $54,000 towards the New Mauno Kaihla Koti Long-term Care Home Redevelopment Fund!
" We often get the question – why do you need to raise funds when you are supported by various Ontario Health Ministries and/or Agencies? The short answer is that their funding covers essentials and not all the other items that we feel enhance our residents’ lives – either through physical comfort or keeping cognitively active.
We are so grateful for the support from residents, their families, members and other friends and supporters of OFRA. You have all made a lasting impact on our residents’ lives and their home at OFRA. From our home to yours – thank you/kiitos. Know that you are making a difference for years to come. "
- Tarja Loewen, OFRF Chair

GivingTuesday is a world-wide movement to create an impact for charitable organizations by donating to our initiatives, or volunteering your time. Occurring every late November or early December, we celebrate GivingTuesday and fundraise for various new items for our homes.
With the proximity to the Christmas season, we also tie it in with our annual end of year appeal. It's the most magical time to support our Homes with a Heart in any way you can. Below are some of our results!
General Funds and New MKK - Cumulatively raised $119,886 in three giving seasons! Donations were allocated by donors to either our general fund or building fund of their choice, including the New Mauno Kaihla Koti Long-term Care Redevelopment Fund.
Enable Table Campaign - Raised $52,487 to purchase 19 new dining room tables and 42 EZ-lift dual arm tablet extenders for MKK. This upgrade increased accessibility for residents of all mobilities, especially with wheelchairs, to more comfortably dine and easier for staff to operate, orient, and clean.
Wardrobe Campaign - Raised $32,831 to replace all 63 resident wardrobes in our Mauno Kaihla Koti (MKK) Long-term Care Nursing Home. The previous wardrobes were showing their age and due for upgrading. At the same time, the home received all new matching beds and bedside tables thanks to other funding.
Slide Into Cheers Campaign - Raised $36,021 for new sliding entrance doors to our Independent Living building, Suomi Eesti Maja. This project greatly increased accessibility to the 134 unit home that is also host to the Ladies' Auxiliary community thrift and fashion shops.
Since announced in 2014, The Foundation and The OFRA Ladies' Auxiliary have been tirelessly fundraising for this project that would see a new 128-bed long-term care facility built. With the generosity of over 1,000 donors, over $1.2 million has been raised! All items that have been purchased with fundraised dollars for the current MKK will be transferred to the new home upon completion! When in-person events weren't possible due to the pandemic, we improvised and created a way to support OFRA from your own home!
In February 2021 and again in 2022, we hosted online auctions that collectively raised $14,380 for New MKK!

Hosted by an energetic pairing of Tim Murphy and our very own, Heidi Schell, the Juhannus Telethon was dinner and a show from your couch! It premiered LIVE on Facebook and viewers raised funds while enjoying talented acts and feasting on pre-ordered meals from Aurora's Westside.
The Telethon raised $47,977 towards New MKK. Click here to watch it again!
The annual Harvest Fest and Harvest Fest Lottery were highly anticipated and enjoyed by hundreds! These events featured a banquet-style dinner, live auctions, and lottery draws. Over $300,000 have been raised due to the success and support of Harvest Fest.

Other note-worthy contributions we have made towards projects or items that directly benefited residents are:
- Beginning in 2023, a flower for each resident is purchased and hand delivered to honour them for Senior's Month every June
- Contributed to the building of Uusi Koti Independent Living and its community gardens
- New baking oven and freezer for the Dietary Department
- Automatic door hinges for resident rooms
- Successful Stroll 'N Roll-a-thon event
- Wheels n' Deals Car Show events
